organsbwhich procedures be used to assign the organ
Text of this Question or Item
626. Recently, medical science has made it possible to save
lives by transplanting body parts from donors to patients who
need them. But for some body organs there are not enough to go
around, and some patients die before they can obtain a
transplant. When only one organ is available and several
patients need it for survival, the organ could be assigned to a
patient by one of the following procedures: Auction: The organ
is assigned to the patient who can pay the most for it. First
come, first served: The organ is assigned to the patient who has
been waiting the longest Lottery: The organ is assigned to the
patient whose name is drawn at random. Merit: The organ is
assigned to the patient who can make the greatest contribution
to others and society. a. Which of these procdures should be
used to assign the organ among the patients who need it for
survival?

contribute are kidneys. Most people can live with only one

two. Do you believe that people with two healthy kidneys should
be permitted to sell a kidney to a hospital or organ center to
use for transplants?

sellbabysurrogate mothers should be permitted
Text of this Question or Item
629. Recently, some married couples who are unable to have
children have paid women, called "surrogate mothers," to bear a
child for them. When the child is born, the couple becomes its
adoptive parents and the surrogate mother receives a fee. Do you
think that this practice should be permitted or forbidden under
the law?
